                    About Laurel United Methodist Church:

The Laurel United Methodist Church celebrated its 100th birthday in November 2008. In the beginning, UMC-Laurel was known as the Methodist Society. In December of 1908, a tent tabernacle was erected on the corner of Third Avenue and First Street at a cost of $138.00. Rev. William H. Calvert was our original pastor. In 1911, the first portion of our church was built and was dedicated on February 18, 1912 as the Ayers Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1939, in accordance with the unification of the three Methodist church bodies in America, the church became known as the Laurel Methodist Church. By 1940 the church membership was 220 and Sunday School enrollment was 284. In 1950, church membership reached 461 and there were 300 enrolled in Sunday School! The addition of the educational wing to our church began in 1957 and was dedicated in 1963. In 1968, we officially became the United Methodist Church of Laurel upon the merger of the Methodist Churches and Evangelical United Brethren Churches in America.

The bell you see sitting outside the east door of the church, was purchased from the Laurel City Council in March 1939 for $1.00. Formerly, this bell was the fire bell for the city of Laurel.

The church has both United Methodist Men and Women's groups. These two groups find a need and fill it; providing scholarships for our graduates, fulfilling other funding opportunities, providing activities for the church, encouraging growth and participation in the up and coming generations...

Christian Education has been an integral part of the church from it's beginning. The church offers Sunday School classes for youth, preschool to Junior High, Adult Education classes, as well as hosting Youth (UMYF) activities each Sunday evening. There have been thirteen Christian Education Directors since the 30s.

Our church has had a chancel choir since the early 1940s. It has been and continues to be a special part of our worship services. Over the past 60 years the choir has been led by a variety of directors. Sue Simon who became director in 1988 fulfills this role to the present.

In 1996, Rev. Dick Storment helped start the Bell Choir. The bells were purchased by Herman "Ike" Schessler in memory of his wife, Lois. Later, chimes were purchased in memory of Walt Parker by his family. The bell choir has been another beautiful, special addition to our worship services.

The Stephen Ministries program was initiated in 2002 with four certified Stephen Ministers. The program grew to include nine other individuals.

Family Ministries is a program that has become a crucial component to the growth and nourishment of both our church family and the families of our church. Under the leadership of Kara Thomae, the Family Ministries committee has grown to include ten individuals who strive to plan monthly activities for the church-be they mission projects or other events such as: Bingo Night, Picnics, Movie Nights, etc.

Finally, the church offers nursery services during both worship services and Sunday School classes. In 2007 the nursery was dedicated to Alice Brown who has provided faithful service to our church in this capacity for 43 years.
