Mother's Day is fast approaching and since we have a beautiful new screen and sound system, we decided we need to put that to good use on this special day. So, we're asking for your favorite photos of your mom/grandmas, you and your mom/grandmas, you and your kids...You love 'em, we want 'em! We'd prefer that you email your photos to the church office, though we do have the use of a scanner, if necessary. The deadline to submit pictures is May 9, 2012. We hope to make this a special addition to our Mother's Day service; get your pictures in today! Also, if you have thoughts on music you'd like included in the video, we're absolutely open to suggestion! This is your new blog post. The LUMC Youth Group will host its first ever “Tip Dinner” on April 29th at 6PM in the Fellowship Hall. There is no set cost to attend this dinner, but guests are asked to bring change and small bills to tip generously and frequently throughout the evening. Appetites, a sense of humor, and your change and small bills are all that is needed to enjoy this evening out.
Servers will be creative and competitive in their efforts to garner tips from guests: “Would you like coffee with your meal? You may need to tip for that cup! A table for four? Right this way...But you didn’t say anything about chairs! That’ll be a quarter, please.” Guests are welcome to join in the frivolity and ask their servers for entertainment in the form of songs, jokes, a dance, or demonstration of talent to earn more tips. If you have to tip to get a fork, tell the server it will be a bigger tip if they hop all the way to and from the kitchen! Please come join in silliness for a good cause. The funds raised through this dinner will help get the youth group to the UMCOR Depot in Salt Lake City this summer, where members will spend a week volunteering.

On April 29, 2012 the LUMC will be observing Native American Sunday with a special offering and a special guest speaker, Barry Beach. If the name sounds familiar it's because Beach was featured heavily in the news at the end of 2011 and early 2012 when he was released from prison after 29 years when new evidence surfaced in his case. He was released from prison pending a new trial. Beach is Cherokee from North Carolina and Sioux from Montana, but he was raised on the Fort Peck Reservation here in Montana. He says his native spirituality and his faith in God have seen him through all of this and he now wants to share his story with others of coming to Christ. It's a Sunday not to be missed, we hope to see you there!
After a year long effort and 18-weeks of classes, the time for the 2012 Confirmation Class to be officially confirmed into the church has arrived.
The Confirmation Service will be included in Worship on Sunday, April 15, 2012. We hope you will join us as twelve of our youth confirm their faith and officially join the Laurel United Methodist Church.
This is such a special time and we are so proud of each of these young ladies and gentlemen. Congratulations to the 2012 Confirmation Class!
This Saturday, April 14, 2012 the Youth will be hosting a movie night in the Sanctuary. All are invited to attend. They will be watching The Passion of the Christ at 6:00 p.m.
If you care to bring snacks, please bring non-messy items and drinks with lids on them.
About the movie: It is rated R due to "sequences of graphic violence," as it depicts the final hours and crucifixion of Jesus. We hope to see you there!
On April 1, 2012 (Palm Sunday) the Sunday School held its annual Bake Sale before and after church services. We were hoping we would be able to catch a nice, big crowd to amp up our fundraising efforts.
And the congregation did not disappoint us. Our 2012 Bake Sale raised $400 thanks to your generosity!
This year the proceeds of our sale were split up between two causes. Two hundred dollars will go towards the LUMC Roof Fund, as the roof needs to be replaced this year. The remaining two hundred dollars is being donated to our local Head Start.
Again, thank you so very much for supporting our kids in their efforts; we couldn't do it without you!
In case you didn't catch the news, we are now offering a Children's Fellowship Time during worship for children in grades 1st - 5th.
This program is held during regular Worship service at 10:15 a.m. and families may choose to send their children to CFT following Children's Time with the pastor.
CFT is available every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month; this allows our adults to take part in Communion Sundays.
The kids have been having a blast! There's some discussion over what was discussed during children's time and there are puzzles, games, and opportunities to get creative.
The United Methodist Men have scheduled their annual Chili Supper, so get ready to mark those calendars and save the date!
The 2012 Chili Supper will be held on Friday, February 10 from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m.
Tickets will cost $5.00/Single and $15.00/Family.
The chili supper is the UMM's primary fundraiser, so please come out and support them! These funds typically go towards a scholarship for one of our college-ready youths.
Pat Bullis, who has been our church secretary for over 19 years now, has submitted her resignation effective January 27th. She has been so effective and has been such a central part of our church life for so long that we will miss her greatly. I know that all of you will want to express your appreciation to her for her long and dedicated service to the church. And toward that end, the Staff Parish Relations Committee will host a reception in her honor planned for Sunday, January 29th, after worship. Hope you will plan to come.
We look forward now to the difficult task of replacing Pat in the church office. The SPRC has met on this already and will need to meet again to finalize some details. As things currently stand, because of the relatively short window of opportunity for full-shift training--and considering everything that the position entails--we have decided to offer the position to Becca Stewart, one of the two persons who have substituted for Pat and who know some of the church office workings. This makes sense also because Becca is our church website web-master and this position will allow better integration of web and office.
Because of other obligations, Becca can not go “full-time” (the full 5 hours daily, Monday through Friday) until the summer. Therefore, we are in need of person(s) who would be able to work on Tuesday and Thursday until summer, and if they choose, be available as substitutes afterwards. It would be a wonderful way of serving the church, earning a little money, as well as experientially positioning yourself to take on the church secretarial position when it comes open again. If you are interested, please contact Pastor David at the church office, 628-6362. We would require some employment information from you as well as a letter expressing your interest. If needed, you may mail the letter to P.O.Box 1055, Laurel, MT 59044. If interested, please respond by Wednesday, Jan. 18th. Any questions can be addressed to Pastor David or Nancy Hart, Staff-Parish Relations Chair.
Thanks for your interest, and for your gratitude to Pat for a job long and well done. Hope to see you all for Pat’s reception on Sunday, 29th. -- Pastor David
